Heart Container Pieces (outside of levels):
1 - East Hyrule, New Kasuto. There is a HCP on a small cliff that is blocked by a bombable rock.
2 - East Hyrule, Kasuto Desert. A HCP is just sitting by the water east of Three Eye Rock.
3 - Central Hyrule, Path of Fire. Along the south shore, there is a path of shallow water. Defeat the blue darknuts out in the shallow water to find a HCP.
4 - Central Hyrule, Great Palace. You will find a HCP just sitting in one of the houses.
5 - South-east Hyrule, Moblin Woods. Climb around the hills in the Moblin Woods to find one in the south-west corner of the woods.
6 - South-east Hyrule, Moblin Woods. Enter a bombable cave on the beach south of the woods that will lead to the HCP in the southern part of the woods.
7 - South Hyrule, Magical Shortcut. There is a small puzzle of changing bushes in the northeast side. This is probably the most annoying HCP in the game to get. Use this map to show you where to go.
8 - South Hyrule, Kakariko Outskirts. Burn a brown bush north of Kakariko village to find a cave that holds a HCP.
9 - South Hyrule, Kakariko Village. Cut down some bushes with your sword to uncover a HCP in the orchards in the north part of the village.
10 - North-East Hyrule, Nabooru. Follow the southern bank of the little stream that runs through the town. There is an invisible maze to the HCP. Continue east until you get to a dead end (on the 2nd screen). Turn around and head north in the first fork. You will come to another fork while heading east (on the 3rd screen). Turn north and after you get to the bend, keep heading south-east. When you hit a corner, move north one square and then continue south-east, repeating for each corner.
11 - North Hyrule, Darunia. One of the houses has a HCP in it. Easy.
12 - North Hyrule, North-eastern Shore. Head east along the northern shore outside of Darunia. When you cross into North-east Hyrule, walk out into the shallow water and follow it west until you come across the HCP (you can get there from the shallow water in North Hyrule if you have the ladder).
13 - North-east Hyrule, Maze Island. When you get the power bracelet (in the palace), head to the north-west corner of the island. There are some rocks you can move to open a path out into the shallow water. Follow the shallows west until you find the HCP.
14 - North-east Hyrule, Maze Island. With the ladder (in the palace), go to the entrance of the island. One screen east there is a way to cross the river, and that will lead to a HCP.
15 - North-east Hyrule, North-east Plains. West of the town, there is a cave blocked by a stream. Use the ladder to get into the cave, and when you get to a fork in the path, head west. In the middle of the mountain range there is a HCP.
16 - East Hyrule, New Kasuto Sea. From where Old Kasuto cave leaves you, there is a path to the south that leads east, but not to the Gambler's Den. You can take this path (which leads to the top-most row of screens in south-east Hyrule) to the dead trees. Walk north, through the wall, starting at the leaf on the center tree in the bottom row (yes, just like the first quest). The path leads out into the water where you use the ladder to find a HCP off the coast of New Kasuto.
17 - Central Hyrule, Lost Hills. The western part of the Lost Hills where rocks are falling, there is a path up the mountain across the stream, use the ladder to get up there to find a HCP.
18 - South-east Hyrule, South-east Beach. East of Moblin Woods, there is a set of docks off the coast of this beach. Use the ladder to cross them to get to a HCP.
19 - South-west Hyrule, Lost Woods Entrance. Just when you enter the brown woods, head north to a room with a magic octoroc. Kill it and its friends to reveal a HCP.
20 - South Hyrule, from the far north-east corner of south-west Hyrule (mountain area, not armos area), there is a cave leading east. Once out of the cave go north, and it will loop back around to South Hyrule. A HCP is waiting for you there.
21 - South-west Hyrule, Ancient Cemetary Entrance. When you cross the Lost Woods, head west then north. Kill the gleeok on that screen to earn a HCP.
22 - South-west Hyrule, Ancient Cemetary. All the way on the northern edge, one screen from the eastern corner, push a grave and an old man will give you a HCP.
23 - South-east Hyrule, Lost Hills. Just north of the Serpent's Lair, there is a small peninsula that has some small hills you can maneuver through to get a HCP using the hookshot you got in the Lost Bastion.
24 - North-east Hyrule, Maze Island. If you go west and then north from Maze Island Palace, you can hookshot across to a bombable cave. A HCP is waiting for you inside.
25 - West Hyrule, Death Mountain Pass. Find the cave that leads to the south-western most overworld area. There you will be rewarded with a HCP.
26 - West Hyrule, Saria. There is a man who sells superbombs in this town. Outside his shop there is a large rock you can superbomb to get the HCP that sits on top of it.
27 - North-west Hyrule, Midoro Woods. In the far south-east corner (accessible from the northeast corner of West Hyrule), there is a bombable cave that has a HCP in it.
28 - North-west Hyrule, Ruto. A shack in the southern part of the town has a HCP.
29 - North-west Hyrule, Northern Plains. On one screen, there is a lone bush that you can burn that sits just north of the road between Ruto and Rauru.
30 - North Hyrule, Parapa Desert. The far south-east corner of the desert is an oasis that holds a HCP.
31 - North Hyrule, Rauru. Once you get the power glove from Parapa Palace, you can get the HCP in the church in Rauru.
32 - North Hyrule, Mido. One of the houses in the town holds a HCP for you.
33 - West Hyrule, Saria outskirts. Southwest of Mido leads to the exit of that blocked off path through Death Mountain Pass. North of the exit of the Pass is a HCP in the water you can use the ladder to get.
34 - Central Hyrule, Old Graveyard. South of Mido in the graveyard is a memorial for an old king. If you play the whistle in front of the grave, you will be able to reach a HCP.
35 - North Hyrule, Great Lake. On both the eastern and western shore, there is a raft dock to take you across the lake. In between the two is a mess of shallow water and fire-shooting statues, but the end will get you a HCP.
36 - West Hyrule, Death Mountain. When climbing Death Mountain you will find a large fork in the path (takes up two screens). Take the east-most path leading up the mountain to find the HCP. It will fork again, but both paths will come back together shortly, so it doesn't matter which one you take.
37 - West Hyrule, Death Mountain. Starting from the large fork described above, take the path leading down the mountain. You will reach the HCP eventually.
38 - North-west Hyrule, Midoro Swamp. Halfway through the swamp, there is a HCP on a tree stump that you can swim to.
39 - Central Hyrule, Lake Hylia. Swim west of the island (south-west of the graveyard), there is a sandbar with a HCP in the center.
40 - North-east Hyrule, Maze Island. Swim all the way to the farthest north-west screen. A cave there will contain the last HCP.

Magic Containers:
1 - North Hyrule, on the eastern half of the map, along the path that leads into Darunia near the northwest shore. A bombable cave leads to the MC.
2 - North-east Hyrule, on maze island near the far southeastern side of the map. There is a bombable cave leading to the MC.
3 - South Hyrule, Spryte's Fountain (F-1) is just east of the dead center of the map. Use a superbomb to open up the entrance to the dungeon to get the MC and a spell.
4 - South-west Hyrule, use the magic wand and book to enter Miff's Sanctuary (F-2) north-east in the Lost Woods. There is a MC and a spell inside.
5 - North-west Hyrule, south-west of North Palace is a bombable cave that holds a MC.
6 - Central Hyrule, go to the Lost Hills in the south-east corner of the map, and use the power glove to enter Oberon's Spings (F-3) to get a MC and the last spell.
7 - South-east Hyrule, there is a dock along the far north-east shore near the Moblin Woods, the MC is just sitting in shallow water on the other side.
8 - East Hyrule, go directly east when you first enter Death Mountain, and just swim across the water and walk the path until you reach the MC.
