-| OVERWORLD WALKTHROUGH |-
This is a walkthrough of the entire overworld. There are links to each dungeon in case you need help there as well. Aside from my text walkthrough of the game, I have also made complete overworld maps. These maps will contain small spoilers about the quest, but I know some people will look at them for help early on anyways. One shows the location of every dungeon, item, HCP, shop, secret money, etc. The other shows you how Hyrule is divided up into sections (each section does have a different title above the map).
Overworld Part 1 (levels 1+):
First of all, get the sword in that cave. Next, there is a warp point east and north of your starting position. ALWAYS take a warp point when you see one. It will unlock the path to that warp point in the world map, allowing you to travel there quickly from far away.
You must start out with Kasuto mountain (ML-1) in the northeast. After climbing the mountain (look for the warp point along the way), you will reach a cave. The path is pretty straighforward with only a couple keys. You will get a full heart container for getting through and beating the Aquamentus guarding the path. You will end up in the hidden town of New Kasuto, where you can buy your first bomb bag.
Next head to Three Eye Rock (Lvl-1) which is southwest of the mountain. There is a desert which has one easy HCP to get just sitting along the shore, so don't miss that. Three eye rock is a cave, also near the shore but farther west. Bring a little money so you can buy a bigger bomb bag in there, but you'll also get the blue candle, which will help you later on. Kill the Dodongos at the end of this palace to continue on.
Travel west until you reach a bridge blocked by rocks. Bomb the rocks and you can enter Old Kasuto. Avoid the ghosts and enter the only open door there. After going through a straight line cave, you will end up in the Lost Hills near southeast Hyrule, where you can find the next levels.
Overworld Part 2 (levels 2-3):
Head a little west first to see the warp point, and go east a little to get on the other side of that wall. Farther east is the Old Gambler's Den, but first you should head west. After crossing a stream you will soon find a ladder down near a fairy spring. Take it and go east until you reach that stream again. Instead of going across the stream, go south and west until you reach an entrance leading south into a wooded area.
Go east through the Grassy Woods to find another warp point. After unlocking that one, head south a couple screen until you see a path east into the Moblin Woods. Head towards the northeast and climb up the ladder to the raised area (theres also a fairy spring just south of that ladder). At the first fork in the path head south (north will lead you out), and do the same and down a ladder at the next fork to reach a HCP. Now back at that fork you can go west on the north side or west on the south side, take the south. It's basically a straight path to the home of the Moblin Brothers (ML-2) in the center, with a warp point along the way. Just don't climb up the ladder after the warp, the dungeon is on the lowered dirt area, and contains the wooden arrows.
Once you exit the Moblin Woods, you should head to the southeast corner of the Southern Shore. You will find a shop there and a warp point. Go east from the warp and you will come across two caves. The second one needs to be bombed, and leads to the other HCP in the Moblin Woods you probably noticed. Keep heading east to find another warp point. Take that warp point to the one you found in the Grassy Woods. Head west two screens (pick up the free money under the armos), then south then west to enter Serpent Rock. Climb the small mountain to enter the Serpent's Lair (Lvl-2), where you can get the wooden boomerang and the cross (amulet).
After leaving Serpent Rock, head north until you reach the Southern Shore. Go straight west into the lower section of the Lost Hills. Travel west through them and about halfway through is a cave where you can buy a larger bomb bag. Go straight south from there and once you enter the Hylia Woods go west. You'll find a warp point and even farther is a fairy spring. You will have to come back here later to visit Spryte, but it's still a nice place to refill life. From there go south and west to the Kakariko Outskirts. Head north until you get to the large open space taking up most of four screens, and go west. There's an obvious burn bush that gets you a HCP, and if you keep going west, burn the bush at the corner heading south to find a secret shop to buy the shield. Head south and then east from there to enter Kakariko Village and find a warp point. There's a HCP in the orchard in the north section, some free money under some grass in the west section of it, and a rock you can bomb east of the houses to open up that entrance to the village. Be sure to pick up a bow, you'll need it next. Finally, the shore north until you find an unblocked bridge leading west this leads to the Abandoned Mansion (Lvl-3) where you can get the whistle and red candle.
Now that you have the whistle, go back to Kakariko Village, and use it right in front of that rock in the center of town (there's a triforce symbol on the ground), and you can learn the slash move. There's one last HCP nearby, go east from Kakariko into the Magical Shortcut. There's another warp point in the northwest corner, but if you go to the east there's an opening north that leads to a maze. The maze is a system of hidden warps, and might be the most annoying HCP in the game to get. Use this map if you want to know the answer.
Before moving on, there's two other places you should check out. If you go to the warp point you found in the Lost Hills near the cave leading from Old Kasuto. Go east along the path and you will enter the thieves' area. In the small field to the north, burn the dead center bush (top left corner of the bottom right screen) and you will find the path leading to the Old Gambler's Den (O-1) so you can get the medium wallet. Be sure to unlock the warp point on the other side of the cave, you'll be back here later. Next go back to the start of the game. From there go west and south, into the Path of Fire. There's a HCP in the far southwest side, but you probably want to skip that for now. Climb the mountain to reach the Great Palace. Aside from the warp point and the HCP in a house west of that, the Great Palace (O-2) in the west will test you. It might be a little hard right now, but if you make it through, the king will allow you to buy potions anywhere by giving you the letter.
Overworld Part 3 (levels 4+):
With the bow, arrows, and whistle, you can go fight the guardian. Go back to the start of the quest, and head northwest. You can wake up the statue of the ghoma, but you can't fight it here. Travel north until you reach a dirt path. North/west on the path will lead to the guardian battle, but you should go east on it first. The town of Nabooru isn't much, but look at the stream running through it. If you stay just south of it, you can walk east out into the water. When you get through the invisible maze, you will reach a HCP. There's also a warp point and some money in the town, so be sure to stop at those while you're there.
Then go west out of the town along the dirt path. There is a bend heading north, but keep going west a little farther to reach a warp point. Then go back to the path and follow it north. When you come across a rock wall with an opening, you can bomb a spot to the right of the opening to get to a fairy spring. Finally, you can go north where you will have to battle the guardian (ML-3). It's just a blue ghoma, but spikes statues and bats will make the job a little harder than you would think. When it dies, it will leave behind the white sword (if you explored the Lost Hills, you might have noticed where it was stolen from). North of that, the HCP for beating the boss is waiting, and some advice, although if you're following this guide it's probably not very helpful. You've finally reached the Northern Plains
First, go west to the town of Darunia. Before you get there you will fight an Aquamentus, but look for the crack in the wall and you will find your first magic container. In the town itself, there is a HCP in the southwest. In the northwest there is a warp point, and if you follow the shallow water north you will find some money. Also in the town, there is a shop where you can buy the magical boomerang (yes it will be neccessary to get before the end of the game, or you could just wait until you can get the fire one), and a bomb shop where you can pick up superbombs. Be sure to keep two with you for a little later, any additional ones will make great weapons though. There's a potion shop there, too, but those are hidden all over the place, and all have the same price.
Now that Darunia is empty of things to do, travel east. If you follow the rock wall in the north, you can find a HCP on the other side once you can go around it on the east side. Keep going east until you reach an area called Maze Island. You'll find a warp point west of the border and a potion shop on the northeast shore, but this isn't exactly at the island yet. Go south through the rocks and you will come to a bridge.
Once you've crossed the bridge, you'll be on Maze Island. Beware of the many like-likes in the area, but the first thing to do is find the warp point on the southwest corner. Go east along the southern edge, and you will eventually come to a bombable rock. Not only is it a fairy spring, but there is a second magic container sitting inside. Go back west towards the warp point, but turn north right before it. Cross the river with the bridge and you will come to a second bridge. Across that bridge is a third one, which will take you deeper into the maze. The maze path isn't that complex, and actually is pretty much a copy of the Maze Island from Zelda 2. You can use that map from gamefaqs, but there is also a warp point in the maze, and a shop where you can buy a new shield. At the end of the maze is the Maze Island palace (Lvl-4) where you will get the ladder and power bracelet.
With the ladder and power bracelet, you can get two of the four HCP's on the island. In the northeast is a small area of pushable rocks (and one bombable one) blocking a shallow water path east to one, and the other is north of the bridge on the island side, just use the ladder to cross the river one last time. You can also find a HCP in the mountains between the North Plains and Nabooru. You can use a superbomb so you can move the rock, or you can go east a little from Nabooru and use the ladder to enter the cave from the other side. Go west in the cave where you can to reach the HCP.
There are a couple more HCP's you can get with the ladder. First is the one in the southeast corner of the Path of Fire (if you didn't get it earlier), because blue darknuts are easy to kill when you're hiding on a ladder. Next you should go to the Lost Hills, to the warp path near the cave from Old Kasuto. Climb down immediately to the Southern Shoreline and go east. There's a little free money along the way, but when you reach a dead end, take a hint from Zelda 1. Part of that rock wall to the north is false, and leads through the Lost Hills and the outskirts of New Kasuto where a HCP is sitting in the shallow water. After that just keep going west back through the Southern Shoreline. You can cross the little stream with the ladder, and keep going west into the Lost Hills. After a little free money, and a warp point, you'll find a place where you can use the ladder to climb back up, where another HCP is waiting. Last go to the warp point in the far southeast of the Southern Shore. Go north along the water's edge to find a third HCP in the water.
Now for the two superbombs. First use the world map to get to the warp point in the Hylia Woods. East of there is that above ground fairy spring. One screen south is a rock among the trees. Use a superbomb to open up Spryte's Fountain (F-1), where you will get a magic container for killing the boss instead of a HCP, and also Farore's Wind, which isn't that helpful but whatever. From there you can head straight south out of the Hylia Woods and then east to the Magical Shortcut (using the world map probably takes longer). There is a very large rock surrounded by four slightly smaller rocks. Superbomb the large one, and you can enter the Magical Shortcut dungeon (O-3) where you can find the fire boomerang, although it's probably something you'll have to come back to later.
Overworld Part 4 (levels 5+):
Now you can continue your quest by going back to Kakariko Village. West of there is a bridge blocked by stones you can now push, leading into the Octorok Woods. You can go west into the Lost Woods, but first go north along the river into Armos Rock. The second screen has stairs hidden under the top center armos, but first you need to get the bait. Go north then east into the maze of tons of armos, and you can find the bait under one in the southeast section that joins the armoses around two 3x3 areas of empty dirt. Now go back to the stairs mentioned earlier, and you can use the bait to open the shop where you'll be able to buy the blue suit if you have the medium wallet.
Go back to the Octorok Woods. In the southwest, there's a potion shop, and just north of that is a warp point. West from the potion shop is the Lost Woods. There is a burnable bush on this screen where you have to pay for the door, but north and west of that is an identical screen with secret money under the same bush. The northeast corner of the Lost Woods, there is a HCP guarded by a magic octorok. Just west of that is a fairy spring, which you will have to return to later to meet Miff. Next you will have to enter the maze part of the Lost Woods, but keep in mind that anytime you are completely lost, you can use the whistle to open a warp out of the maze.
You can skip this part if you're using the walkthrough. Go to the far southeast part of the lost woods, and go west. There is an arrow pointing west, so keep going that way to make it through the two maze paths. This will lead to the Lost Pass, and an information shop where you can buy knowledge of the Lost Woods. You should write the information down, or just use the next part of the walkthrough. You can get back through the Lost Woods to the beginning if you keep travelling east through the maze screens.
There are three major reference points in the Lost Woods, all outside of the maze area. Point-1 is the dead tree west of the room with the secret money and point-2 is a skelaton in the sand on the other side of the Lost Woods. In order to get from point-1 to point-2 start out at the tree and go: W|S-S-E-W|N-E-S-S|S-N-N-W|W-S-S-W|W-N-N-W. where N,E,S,W are the compass directions, while | marks a new screen and - marks the maze path for that screen. West will lead to a different part of the Lost Pass, and a new warp point. Continue west and north, and when you come across a Gleeok, you can kill it for a HCP. West of that is another information shop, this time with a puzzle to get through the Lost Woods.
First, though, you should head north into the Ancient Graveyard. The southeast side there is a shop in a bombable wall, and one screen west of the northeast corner is a HCP under a movable gravestone, but you'll need bait for that one. Go to the far northwest section, and you might notice something odd about the southern wall. There is a row of armos under that wall, blocking the path south. Once you get past them, you'll be at the entrance of the Secret Grave (ML-4) where you will find the magic wand.
Instead of going back down to the Lost Woods, you should head east to the Foot of Death Mountain. There's some free money to the north, and a potion shop and warp point east of that. Keep going east to unlock a barrier preventing you from reaching the Ancient Graveyard from the other side. Continue east through the area, finding a warp path along the way. When you hit a wall, go north and then continue east to a cave. The cave leads farther east to the Hidden Outcrop. Go north, and then its a pretty straightforward way to a HCP. Go back to the cave, but instead of going in continue south and east, where you will find a warp point and some money. Take the warp point back to the Lost Pass.
The information you bought (or didn't buy if you're reading this) is three pieces of a maze path that you have to put in the right order. You can guess what order they go in, and see if it's right starting at point-2, but you can figure it out as well, using only the order of screens which the old lady also tells you. Anyways, here's the path starting from point-2, N|N-W-E-N|N-N-E-E|N-S-E-E|W-W-S-U, which leads to point-3, the Lost Bastion (Lvl-5), which has the hookshot and magic book inside (magic book is not an optional item). To get from the Lost Bastion back to point-1 go E|E|S|E|S, but you can always enter the maze and use the whistle to get back to that side.
Now that you have those three items, you can go back to the Old Gambler's Den (O-1) in the far east. The second path requires the hookshot, and leads to the large wallet (giving you plenty of time to fill it up). Then you should warp back to the Octorok Woods, and go to the fairy spring there. There is a bush you can burn with the wand and book, opening a path leading west. This is the entrance to Miff's Sanctuary (F-2), where you will get a magic container for killing the boss instead of a HCP, and you will earn Din's Fire.
There is also two HCPs you can get. First warp to the Grassy Woods. Head north to the Southern Shoreline, and there is a rock structure that you can use the hookshot to get across. Aside from the HCP sitting there, there's also a large amount of money that you need the power glove to get, so if you're strapped for cash later you can come back. The second is on Maze Island, right near the palace (warp and walk your way through, or use the whistle to get there if you think you're lucky). Go north, use the hookshot to cross the small water gap, and bomb the wall to find it.
Now use the world map to get to the eastern warp in the Foot of Death Mountain. Head north from there, and then west. You'll need the raft if you want to climb Death Mountain, but you can bomb a wall on that same screen and then enter Death Mountain Pass (ML-5). This is a mixture of caves and overworld, which matches up extremely well with the Death Mountain Caves from Zelda 2, and there is an extra HCP sitting in the overworld on the southwest corner. You will be able to buy more bombs after beating the boss.
Overworld Part 5 (levels 6+):
You will end up in the Saria Outskirts when you get out of Death Mountain Pass, and Saria is just down the road. This is the other town to buy superbombs here. Outside of that shop, use a superbomb to get the HCP. There's also a warp point, a shop, and a potion shop in the town. You should head east out of the town, across the river, and when you get to the weird bend in the road, go up to the third row of trees, and burn the second one from the left. Here, you will get your magic consumption cut in half. Keep going east on the path until you see a tight grove of trees along the river. Use the whistle right next to the trees and you'll get some money. When you get to the edge of the grass go north (continueing east is basically a dead end for now), and a HCP is in a bombable wall. Go back west from there to a wall, and then south to find a warp point. Finally go all the way back west, and through the swamp. There is a fairy spring in the northeast part of it, and a cave all the way north.
This cave leads to the Northwest Plains, although it doesnt look very much like plains yet. Head north to get to the town of Ruto. There is a HCP right when you enter the town. You can buy a couple items in the shop if you haven't already, and you can even buy a larger bomb bag here. There's also some free money, a warp point, and information shop; even a potion shop sits northeast of it. Go east into the Northwest Plains. Immediately go south and west there is a fairy spring if you need it. North Castle sits in the center of the plains, surrounded by water. Your first goal should be to follow the dirt path east. When you get to a bend where the path moves a little south, keep going south to find a warp point. Go back north to the path, and a little farther east is a suspicious bush that's hiding a HCP, supposing you can bribe the goriya with some bait. You can keep following the path, going east at the bend, into the Dark Forest. Stay on the path until you see another fork in it. South is a warp point, but west is Rauru, where you can buy the red suit.
Go back through the Dark Forest to the Northwest Plains. North of that is Tantari Desert. There's an entrance on the east and west side, and both will take you where you need to go. Generally stay south until you reach the center of the desert, then start looking for ways north. Tantari Cave (ML-6) is sitting along the shore, where you'll find the hammer. East of that cave is a warp point you can only get to from the mouth of the cave, but that can wait until after you beat the cave.
Now that you have the hammer, things will be easier. You can go south through the Dark Forest, and then east into Mido. Along the path there's a bombable wall with a fairy spring. There's a HCP and some free money here, plus an information shop. And you can finally buy the magic sword. Don't go south of the town yet. Before you continue, be sure to grab a shield if you lost yours. Don't forget to buy the second bow when you get the money, it's the last piece of equipment you'll have to buy.
Go back into the Dark Forest to the east. If you follow the northern edge of it, all the way to the east is a random shop. There's a potion shop in the south, just west of the warp point. Your goal is the cave all the way to the east then north. It will take you to the dangerous Parapa Desert. There's a fairy spring northeast of the cave, just use the whistle near the empty patch of lowered dirt. Head all the way east following the southern wall and you'll find a warp point. Keep going south and there's an oasis with two magic octoroks guarding a HCP. Now head north along the shoreline. You will come across Parapa Palace (Lvl-6) where you can get the lens of truth and the power glove.
Now you can go all the way to the southwest corner of the Northern Plains to pick up a magic container in a bombable cave. And you can go back to that fairy spring in the Lost Hills, more or less in between the two warp points on the raised up gray area. West there's some rocks you can push and now you can enter Oberon's Springs (F-3) where you can get a magic container instead of HCP for beating the boss, and Nayru's Love.
Overworld Part 6 (levels 7+):
Next you should head over towards Mido. On your way there, you'll notice the path splits at the fiary spring, east to go to Mido and south. Follow the path south into the Ancient Cemetary, but don't enter the actual cemetary yet. Instead go southwest to the bridge going west into the Secret Pass. This is where that second path in Death Mountain Pass end up, the one you need the hammer to get through. There's no point in going back into the caves, but follow the northern shore west and you will reach a HCP you need the ladder to get.
Then it's time to head into the cemetary. Directly south from the entrance is a place called Old King's Tomb. It brings you to a different screen with a large gravestone near the top. There's a HCP behind it, so use the whistle on the triforce mark on the ground to get it. Now go back towards the entrance of the Ancient Cemetary, and take the path east (in the cemetary). This will lead to a new warp point. Now go to the southwest corner of the cemetary and follow shore to the east, until there's a path going north. That path circles around leading to a dark gravestone you can move with the power glove. This is the entrance to Old King's Tomb (ML-7). There is no exit there, but if you go west in the tomb, you will end up in the graveyard outside of the overworld Old King's Tomb. The other end of the dungeon leads to the Central Island, and you'll get the silver arrow along the way.
Now that you're on Central Island, you can circle around the outside of the island. You'll notice some shallow water leading north. There's some free money up there if you need it, if not continue around the island. After going through a short cave, you'll be on the raised up area. Keep going east from here, once you see a split in the path, the ladder leading down from the raised area leads to a potion shop in the cave you noticed along the way, and the other path is where you want to go. You'll come to another fork where you can go east or you can go north up a ladder. East is a small amount of money, but unless you need it climb the ladder and go west. When you get to a screen with armos, there is a shop under the center armos out of the three in the top right corner. Just go west to the entrance of the Island Palace (Lvl-7), where you will get the raft and the mirror shield.
You should go west from here and there is a warp point. Just ignore the raft path along the west shore of the island, it only leads back to the Secret Pass. You should go to the warp point in the southwestern section of the Southern Shoreline and head north. There's a raft path leading to a fairy spring and a magic container. Next go to either Mido or the western part of the Nabooru Outskirts. There's a raft path between the two, and along it there's a branch that will take you to a small island. Go south on the shallow water and you'll end up going north, where you'll find a HCP. The quickest way to a warp point is by going east on the raft to the Nabooru Outskirts, a few screens east of that is the warp. Finally, warp down to Kakariko Village. Go northwest and you'll come across a raft path. Go west on that little Island to find the entrance to the Water Palace (O-4) where the magical key is hiding. It's not easy to get, though.
Overworld Part 7 (level 8+):
Warp back to the eastern section of the Foot of Death Mountain. North then west is a raft path that leads to the entrance of Death Mountain. After crossing the stream twice along the path, you'll notice there's a fork with lots of ways to go. Take either the second or third path north to find a warp point. Next take the easternmost path north, and continue going west (the path splits but both come together shortly) and you'll end up at a HCP. Go back to the fork and take the southern path down the mountain. This will lead to a small amount of money and another HCP.
Now take the western path. You'll come across a bombable wall with a store inside, but keep going west. There's another bombable wall with a fairy spring if you need the health, but keep following the path north then back west. There will be a second warp point there, and then at the northernmost screen a split in the path going east and west. Do not bomb the wall, or you'll have to pay for the door, but if you go east, there is some free money if you push the leftmost rock. Go as far west as you can, and there will be a potion shop behind a bombable wall. One screen east of that is the entrance to Spectacle Rock (Lvl-8), where you will get the boots and the gold arrow.
With the boots, one new area is opened up. Warp back to the Saria Outskirts and go north. There's a pond blocking your path, but there's a bombable wall covering a cave to the other side. Go west into the Midoro Swamp, which is a rough place with some annoying enemies, lots of fireballs from statues, and some slow walking. Go west along the southern edge until you get to a small patch of water contained on a single screen. Go north there to find a warp point. Go straight west from there, and you will notice a circular thing you can stand on. Blow the whistle there and the thing in the water above where you're standing will rise up giving you the entrance to Midoro Palace (ML-8), home of the flippers.
With the flippers, you can gather the last remaining HCPs in the game. First, though, you can go west from the palace and dive in the center of that water patch for large sum of money. Then go east through the swamp and on the northern screen about halfway through the swamp is a HCP in the middle of some water. Go west back to the warp point and go to the Old Cemetary. Get to the southern shore, and swim southwest. One screen west of Central Island is a large sandbar with a HCP in the middle. For the last one, warp (or whistle) back to Maze Island and make your way to the palace. Go north and swill all the way to the northeast screen and there it is inside a cave. One last place you should go is the east part of the Foot of Death Mountain. Go north into Death Mountain and immediately east is a small pond you can cross. Follow the path around and your reward will be the last magic container.
Supposing you beat all of the optional and fairy dungeons, you should have all 24 heart containers, all 8 magic containers, and every item and piece of equipment except the gold suit and the master sword. There is only one thing left in the game. Warp to the Northwest Plains, and swim your way into North Castle west of the warp. There is an expensive shop and a gambling house inside the walls, as well as one larger house. Go through the larger house to open up a path to the castle itself. Go farther west and you will find the entrance of the North Castle (Lvl-9), where you'll find the gold suit, the master sword, and Zelda.
